Stolen from a couple people on my friends and my reading lists, the December posting/talking meme. Pick a date in December and give me something to talk about. History, historical personages, historical events, Bible related things, TV, books, movies, fandom, writing, shipping in fandom, actors/actresses, families of choice or found family or team as family, food, tropes, travel, fictional characters and all of their feelings, cuddly animals, whatever.

Notes re: Christmas Eve/Day posting and Dec 28th though 31st postings: I will not be able to post on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day themselves, but feel free to prompt me for those days anyways, as I will triple post on the 26th for Boxing Day's topic and the topics for Christmas Eve & Christmas Day as well. I will also be house and pet sitting from the 28th of Dec to the 8th of Jan and so I've added some bonus days onto the meme because I can.

1)You can give me anything for a prompt so long as it's not gory or glamourizes rape/rape culture, murder, assault of any kind or torture in any way. These things are my hard no's and I will not back down on my choice to not write or talk about them on my DW/tumblr/LJ in any way. Incest is a medium no as I do admit that within some of my fandoms and/or pairings, there are couples who are also related (eg Scarlet Witch/Quicksilver), ask regarding this one if you aren't sure about my feelings about a pairing that is incestous.

2)Feel free to suggest multiple topics/dates, but I might shuffle or bump if I get enough to fill the month.

3) Feel free to just leave a topic and no date. I'll fill it in.

4) prompts can be factual or fictional, as you chose.

5) I reserve the right to flail around awkwardly and not be very good at it.

Can one conceivably, for fanfic storytelling purposes, say that the MCU and AoS universes are one and the same? I mean we've got crossover characters and overarching plotlines that connect them so, to me, AoS slots far more nicely into the MCU than the X-Men films do (despite having two characters in common). So for me, I'm just going to assume the two universes in question are the same until i am proven otherwise.

So I claimed "Ruby|Red (Once Upon a Time Character)" for this challenge cycle which is "kinks". I'm doing the 30 prompts prompt table and will be pairing Ruby with various other female characters from the show, so pretty any adult woman we've seen, aside from Granny, is basically fair game here.

Okay so I posted about the theme sets and claims i made over at the Overlooked community already but now I have something new to talk about in regards to that. So given how many bingo cards and challenges I've amassed and signed up for lately, I decided that since this is an open-ended 'challenge', I'd make myself up a bingo card for it.

And here it is:

link to tumblr post where you can see the card

Explanation about the title of the center space (the free space) is included in the tumblr post.

Okay so I love the show, Robin Hood produced by the BBC and Tiger Aspect. One of the things I've noticed as I rewatch the show is that, for a series set in 12th Century England, the female characters-Marian and Djaq (whose real name is Safiyya, for those who found my blog somehow and know nothing about this fandom) mainly but also some 'one-off' characters, such as Matilda, Queen Eleanor, and Meg-are given quite a decent amount of agency in their own rights. They are strong, they are smart, they are independent and they do not need a man to defend them. Marian and Djaq do chose to begin (or perhaps 'resume' is the better word in Marian's case) a romantic relationship with a male character, Marian with Robin Hood himself (of course), and Djaq with Will Scarlett. However these relationships are NOT what defines them nor do these realtionships rob them of their agency. Even after Robin has returned to England and they have begun in secret, by default as he is nearly immediately outlawed and Marian's eventual betrothal [despite the show's use of the word 'engaged', 'betrothal' and 'betrothed' are better and more period correct words] and near wedding [which she herself puts a stop by punching Guy in the face with her right hand, onto which she's placed the ring] to Guy, Marian maintains her agency and her guise as the Nightwatchman which begun as her way of going to war at home( as she says to her father Sir Edward, 'I went to war too. Against poverty.') and evolved into a truly real identity for her. On the other hand Djaq and Will's relationship is much less difficult, although there's the small detail of djaq dressing like a man for most of the series, although by season 2 when everybody knows she is, in fact, a woman, she's added some feminine touches to her outfit and has grown her hair out a bit, it is much more on the sidelines and 'off-camera' so to speak. Much of it grows unseen by the audience until the end of the second season.

I'll edit this later to include details on Matilda and Meg. Right now, I'm tired and going to sleep.

Okay so I stumbled across the overlooked comm the other day and I could not resist making a couple of claims. So yes, these are my claims. Some of the prompts feature commentary to remind myself what I have planned/am considering doing with the prompt or short little plot summaries to help me stay on track when I actually write the pieces.

First Claim I made:

Fandom: The Young Riders
Theme Set: 4 (IV)
Claim: Fandom as a whole.

Theme Set IV
1. Bridge. (Emma writes a letter to her successor as station mistress, in order to bridge the gap between her departure and the new station mistress's arrival. Rachel then finds ways to build a bridge with each of the boys and Mr. 'Spoon.)

2. Miss. (There are at least two ways I can fill this one.)

3. Running. (I know exactly how to fill this. Any TYR fans get my drift? Buckettes, I know you'll get it for sure.)

4. Appropriate. (oh, this will be fun, so many ways to go here...)

5. Fatigue. (after a harrowing week of runs, one of the boys is fatigued and Teaspoon's station chores are not helping any to lessen to lessen their fatigue.)

6. Fancy free. (Lady for a Night fic)

7. Loss. (possibly set in between Presence of Mine Enemies and Survivors which would mean Buck centric and dealing with Ike's death and dealing with that thing that most TYR fans like to pretend never happened...at least not the way the show showed us it did...)

8. Peace. (Peace is hard to come in the bunkhouse. But it's even harder to come by in town, for three of Teaspoon's Young Riders. Buck, Noah and Ike centric.)

9. One shot. (He only had this one shot, this one chance to tell her how he felt before Kid swooped back into her heart.)

10. Bite. (once again possibly set in between Presence of Mine Enemies and Survivors which would mean Buck centric and dealing with Ike's death and dealing with that thing that most TYR fans like to pretend never happened...at least not the way the show showed us it did...)

Second Claim I made:

Fandom: Robin Hood BBC
Theme Set: 3 (III)
Pairing: Will/Djaq/Allan (my OT3 for the fandom)
Theme Set III:

1. Storm. (A sudden spring storm forces Will, Djaq and Allan to take shelter in the most unexpected place and with each other. There are no secrets now betwixt the three. And no one goes back to camp not knowing the taste of the others.)

2. Cliché. (No idea how to fill this right now.)

3. Kiss. (A kiss can change a person's life for ever. Four kisses that changed Will's, Djaq's and Allan's lives.)

4. Moment. (One moment can change everything. It's an unspoken truth that all three of them know full well. What if Allan made a diffent choice after Guy made his 'offer' at the end of Sister Hood?)

5. Distance. (on the ship to the Holy Land, Djaq reflects on the distance that has grown between her two boys. And between herself and Allan. How can she fix this problem?)

6. Friendship. (It takes her a while to pinpoint when her feelings changed from friendship to something more for each of her boys, she realizes and theirs for her. Navigating the rocky road from friendship to something more is complicated when you're outlaws and one of you is really a woman disguised as a boy.)

7. Opportunity.(Will has had precious little opportunity to really work with wood since the gang found out about the Sheriff's plot with the Black Knights. When he gets one, he crafts something very special.)

8. Imagination. (Never in her wildest imaginings, did Djaq picture this happening after she and Will stayed in the Holy Land. It is a letter from Allan, clearly dictated to a learned member of the gang, that brings them home in the middle of the most unimaginable situation. S3 fic.)

9. Time. (Djaq has been captured and sentenced to hang. now that the others are in Nottingham, time is running short for a rescue. Can Will and Allan stick to Robin's plan and save her or will they lose their hearts' shared love?)

10. Exposure. (it's winter in Sherwood and Djaq's gotten caught in a snowstorm. Now she's been exposed to frostbite. Can Will and Allan save her?)

Edmund James Pevenise, Duke of Lantern Waste, Count of the Western Marches, Sir Edmund of the How, Knight of the Noble Order of the Table, King of Narnia, the Just, hates winter now. He loved it as a child before Narnia but now he hates it quite vehemently. He will, and has from their real Narnian winter, usually spend much of the season buried (rather than simply wrapped in them like his siblings) in fur wraps taken from beasts that served the army of Witch-Queen Jadis (for 'Witch-Queen' is the only title Edmund will give her and the only way in which he will acknowledge her rule of his Kingdom) without any remorse when questioned briefly about their service to her, and which Edmund and his brother killed most of shortly after establishing their reign over Narnia, seated beside the fire in either his bedchamber, which he shares with Peter (he shares all of his chambers with Peter, a necessity they discovered within the first half year of their reign), his brother and High King no matter their place of Royal residence, or in his private study. He cannot escape court forever though, and on the days Peter forces him to attend, he will sit on his throne in the Great Hall of his own manor house and stare at a spot on the back wall, listening to the speeches and carols, and later the revelery that he will refuse to join in until his younger, Valiant Sister-Queen Lucy begs him to. This year is worse than most other, for this year, they are snowed in and it looks as though the bilzard will not be letting up any time soon. He is glad for the extra thick curtains he selected for the windows and the likewise extra thick tapestries that cover the walls of his manor house in the winter( in summer, both curtains and tapestries are replace with lighter ones, but for winter, at the first frost each year, he has had the extra thick ones of each pulled from storage and hung in their proper places, whether he intends to winter there or not)._

This is their fifth and a half winter in Narnia (he's counting the end of Her winter spell that his siblings and he brought about as a half winter for them), and Edmund decides he truly hates this winter more than the others. It is threatening to keep them snowbound here until it decides to settle itself down. He wants to be able to stage snowball fights with Susan by his side against Peter and Lucy. He wants to go on a sleigh ride with his siblings and watch them marvel at the calm blankets of white the snow has dropped over all Narnia. And He wants to be able to enjoy all of this, but he can not, because the Witch-Queen and her spell work have tainted Winter for him. And it is also because he fears she has cursed him to never enjoy winter the way he once did, to never get warm enough during the final season of the year, to have worse nightmares then he does the other three quarters of the year during this season. His siblings call his dislike of the season "Winter Sickness" and so now does he, if only in the privacy of his own mind or journal. It's become a bit of a joke between his brother and sisters to quip to each other as autumn winds down, 'Watch out. Ed's slipping into his usual Winter Sickness!' or 'It's that time of year again! Winter Sickness is settling over our Just Brother-King once more.' He just smiles and tolerates their good natured teasing. Aslan knows he doesn't mind it for their quips are not any more but the sad, unvarnished truth of Edmund's life now.

His siblings try to distract him more this winter than they have in previous winters since they arrived in Narnia. And for a while, when it is clearly daylight, these attempts momentarily succeed. But when the sun sets, Edmund is thankful, but knows that the efforts are futile, though he would never say as much to his loving, loyal, kind and wonderful Siblings and co rulers.

Susan brings him hot tea several times a day as he sits by his blazing fire in his study and they talk, about whatever Edmund wishes to share. Edmund is closer to Susan than to Peter in many small ways, but there are things one does not speak of with one's sister that one will with one's brother. He does not tell Susan of his fears or his worries of what the Witch-Queen might have done to him before her demise. He talks to her of all other matters, but not this, never this.

Peter coaxes him to join his brother in the small indoor training arena each day for an hour and they trade sword blows while conversing, under the watchful eye of Orieus or another commander of their army. They use blunted blades in these sparring sessions, one of Orieus's insistences after one too many injuries were afflicted upon each of the Brother-Kings. They also toss good natured teasing jabs at each other as they spar. It is Peter that Edmund wants to tell of his fears and his worries, but not in the indoor training arena where there are other ears present, who may not be quite as circumspect as Peter about keeping these fears and worries of Edmund's private.

Lucy joins him in his window seat in the evenings, two goblets of warm mulled wine in her hands, one for each of them. She is wrapped in her furs, and he buried in his, and on clear nights, they watch the stars dance over Narnia, reflecting off the snow covered ground, and on snowy nights they watch the snowflakes drift to the forest floor or come to rest on tree boughs already bearing the weight of many snowflakes. They talk in quiet tones of whatever Lucy can think of to lighten Edmund's mood before they each go to their bedchambers. Lucy, too, Edmund wishes to tell, for she is wise, and close to Aslan, and if any of his siblings would be able to give him spiritual counsel relating to the Great Lion, it would be Lucy.

He is ever thankful for their efforts, and tells them so, even though they fail to completely distract him from his worries and concerns, which is a fact he does not share with his siblings.

For Edmund, the only bright spot of winter now is Christmas. He is sitting up by the well fed and very warm fire in the fireplace one night in his and Peter's bedchamber, while Peter is asleep in his own bed, oblivious to the dark thoughts and bad memories keeping his younger Brother-King awake this night, when to his surprise Father Christmas appears in the doorway and enters the room. He has, apparently, lost track of the days and it is late on the night of Christmas Eve. "Edmund, Your Majesty. You should be asleep! I can't give you your presents if you aren't asleep." Father Christmas remarks, and although his words should be a rebuke, they are kindly spoken with only the slightest hint of a rebuke present in the tone or the words themselves. "Couldn't sleep. What with the blizzard and some bad memories being conjured up by it, My Lord of Christmas." is the Just King's short, tired but polite answer. "Here, have some more mulled wine, Your Majesty, it will warm you and help you to sleep, my king," Father Christmas says with a laugh at Edmund's title for him and reaches for the decanter on the small table beside Edmund. He pours two goblets and hands one to the young king who takes it and cautiously takes a single slow sip. When nothing strange happens, he throws back his head and sleepily drains his goblet in four quick swallows. Although why he is so cautious when he saw the wine poured and passed to him, he is not sure, for it is not as though Father Christmas, of all people, would seek to poison him. Aid his sleep on this of all nights? Yes. Poison him? No. Father Christmas merely laughs, "Tired, are we, Edmund?" The young king nods while his empty goblet nearly falls from his downward stretched hand to the floor, before it is reduced by Father Christmas. Father Christmas helps him out of his chair and over to his bed. "There, now, sleep my liege, and all will look better in the morning." Edmund falls into the bed, half asleep already and instinctively, his hand reaches out for Peter's outstretched, waiting, warm hand.

Almost ever since the night of their coronation, the brother kings have shared royal quarters, only maintaining separates studies for privacy. The first few months, they had maintained separate quarters that were next to each other, but as Edmund's nightmares grew in frequency, he would be more often found asleep in Peter's bed, curled inside his big brother's protective hold, clinging in sleep to Peter as though Peter was the one thing that would keep him anchored in reality, then he would be found in his own. And in the end, it was decided for the good of everyone that Peter and Edmund should simply remodel their quarters to be one large space. So the connecting wall was carefully knocked down, and the entire space reconfigured to serve both kings. Edmund's bed was moved into Peter's bedchamber for simplicity's sake, and originally placed immediately next to Peter's bed, thus creating, in effect one overly large bed for both Kings. As time went on, Edmund's bed and Peter's were separated, but only so far apart that both boys could each reach a hand into the space between so that their brother could hold onto the other in sleep, should they need it.

And each and every time Edmund has had particularly bad nightmares (which are more predominant in this last season of the year then they are in Spring, Summer or Autumn), he has known that Peter is there, and comfort is only as distant as the space between their beds, in which is always outstretched his older Brother and High King's hand. These nightmares are the ones that wake him screaming, screaming until his throat aches and his voice is nearly gone and he is hoarse from the lengthy time he screams. They are the one where he wakes shaking and so cold all the furs and blankets in the world could not warm him. The ones where, in the gloom of the shadows of the dimly lit room, he almost thinks he can see the pale face of the Witch-Queen watching him from the shadows, can almost hear her voice in his mind, telling him he is cursed, winter will always freeze his blood for the rest of his life from the first snow until the spring thaw. And all he has ever had to do to calm himself and anchor himself and reassure himself that She is dead and gone and can not hurt him any more, is to reach his hand out into the space between his bed and Peter's and find his brother's waiting hand there. Sleeping with his hand in his elder brother's hand is the one thing that allows him to truly relax in sleep during this cold, dark season, and especially on the coldest, darkest nights.

Meeting the women behind the masks of men

Part 1: Lady Marian of Knighton:

The first time that Marian dresses as a man and gives food and coin to the poor, she doesn't name her alter-ego. She doesn't speak at all, just leaves the food and coins on doorsteps and continues throughout the village until she has no more food or coin to give out. The morning after that when her maid arrives at Knighton Hall and tells Marian about what the villagers are saying about her own activities the previous night, she asks if the responsible party has any name. Her maid tells her that the villagers are calling Marian's alter-ego (although she just says the person who left the gifts of food and coin) 'The Nightwatchman.' The third time she dresses as the Nightwatchman, she smiles beneath her scarf and waves as she rides away. By the time Robin returns, she feels like the Nightwatchman is as much who she is as Lady Marian is, if not more so. And even after her hair is publicly cut to shame her after she disobeys the Sheriff's direct orders regarding Nettlestone, she still feels as though the Nightwatchman is more who she truly is than Lady Marian is, except when she is with Robin and then she feels as though Marian and the Nightwatchman are exactly the same person.

Part 2: Èowyn, White Lady of Rohan

The first time Èowyn dons men's clothes, stolen old clothes of Èomer's if she is honest, it is so that she can follow Èomer and Thedred to ride out on patrol without the restrictions a gown presents her. It is in that moment that Dernhelm is born, although 'he' rarely makes an appearance around Theoden or Grima. Even Hama is unaware of who Dernhelm really is. She follow her brother and cousin for years in this disguise and it is not until one day in their late teenage years that her brother and cousin both realize that Èowyn is never waiting to greet them when they return after their patrols or hunting trips any longer and has not been for several years past. That same night, they question her and her secret life slips out in haltingly slow words to the two members of her kin that she loves best. They tell her to put her secret life to the side and to train as a shield maiden instead of masquerading as a solider and member of the Rohirrim. She tries it for a time and finds a small measure of solace with the shield maidens but there is always a part of her that misses being Dernhelm. So she leaves the shield maidens' ranks and wanders the Golden Hall purposelessly for some time until Lord Aragorn and his unlikely companions-the Wizard Gandalf Greyhame, an Elf prince and a Dwarf- arrive at the Hall. Years after Dernhelm's first appearance, in the moment that Èowyn slips her helmet off of her head and shakes out her long hair and makes her declaration to the Witch-King of Angmar of "I am no *man*," she feels something break deep inside her mind. Later she realizes that it was that part of her that had embraced Dernhelm and forsworn Èowyn. Later still, she finds the strength to take the best of Dernhelm and turn that into a part of Èowyn. And finally she finds a place as the First shield maiden of Gondor and wife of Gondor's Steward. And yet, upon occasion, her husband will find her gone and her dresses left behind while her armor and sword are gone and he will know that Dernhelm, and not Èowyn, has gone for a ride, and he smiles as he thinks of his strong-willed wife's secret side.

Part 3: Saffiyah the Saracen
When Saffiyah first dons boys’ clothing for a serious purpose rather than as a means to assist her father at the battlefield hospitals without being looked at as strange, she has just finished cutting her hair, again. Her twin has just died in her arms with their father’s hands deep in Djaq’s wounds, stained blood red. Her tears have washed his hair clean of dirt and sand and blood and left tear tracks down her face. After Saffiyah has helped her father prepare her brother’s body for burial, she digs though Djaq’s belongings to find some clean clothes and she gathers up two sets of clothes, one for him to wear to the grave and the other for herself. It is safer, in this time of war and death and hatred to be male than to be female. Being female means too many dangers from the Crusaders in some many ways. Being a man brings with it a whole different set of dangers but they’re ones that Saffiyah is willing to risk for the chance to avenge her brother’s death and drive the Crusaders out of her land. She reasons that since Djaq is dead, it is not stealing. It is inheriting his possessions and keeping them within the family. Her father disapproves of her plan but he knows she is headstrong, and stubborn and strong willed and will do as she wishes in this regard. She manages to maintain her disguise as Djaq for over two years before she is captured as a slave and sent to England then rescued once there by a gang of mostly young men. One of them quickly discovers her secret and reveals her true gender to the gang which leads to her revealing her true name but insisting on being called Djaq and inviting herself to stay with them for good. It takes her some time to bring some aspects of Saffiyah into Djaq, once she is sure she is safe among them, but eventually she does. Even once she is dressing more femininely, she maintains much of Djaq within herself.
